Caló Kitchen Now Open

Approachable Mexican dishes with big portions and reasonable prices

Caló Kitchen + Tequila, a casual Mexican restaurant with roots in Orange County, opened September 17 at the Apollo Landing project with a wide menu of combo plates and tacos that should appeal to the office crowd in the area. The Beach Reporter’s Eileen Shields first mentioned the place, located next to Shake Shack, Philz Coffee, Tender Greens, and the newly opened Randy’s Donuts, as the fifth restaurant from the Heredita family, which also owns four branches of Carmelita’s.

The first Carmelita’s opened back in 1962, according the The Beach Reporter, but this location is a bit of a new school take on the age-old formula of carne asada, queso fundido, enchiladas, and guacamoles that became popular across the Southland in the past century. El Segundo’s own Sausal has this rancho-style Mexican cooking on the menu just a few miles north.

Meanwhile Caló Kitchen, which has Sergio Cortez at the kitchen’s helm, takes more a overt Mexican-American take with prime grilled skirt steak, spicy camarones, and crispy chicken flautas, served in heaping portions and with housemade tortillas. The camarones were an early hit but the skirt steak’s seasoning seemed heavy handed on the salt, which the kitchen might’ve addressed after preview dinners.

Prices are decent too, hovering around the teens to mid-twenties for most of the non-steak options. It’s the kind of unchallenging but generally satisfying fare that replaces the El Toritos and Acapulcos of yesteryear. Caló Kitchen is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
